One day in 2012, Christen Haines had just finished dressing a mannequin in the front window of her Steveston boutique, Best Dressed by C, when she was dismayed to see people walk by without a glance. Then an idea popped into her head. She asked her assistant to hand her one of the wedding gowns that had just come in. "I put the dress on and I went into the window front," says Christen of that summer day in 2012.

Moving around and smiling, Christen became a live mannequin. Passersby started taking notice, pointing, taking photos, laughing and interacting with her. "It's been done in New York and London, England, but it's the first time it's ever been tried in Richmond," says the savvy businesswoman. Soon, word spread and the local newspapers picked it up.

The boutique, which sells brand new wedding and bridesmaid gowns at deeply discounted prices, as well as formal and casual wear, jewellery and more, was getting busier by the day." I had an older man come in and thank me … he told me I'd taken him back to 44 years ago when his wife walked down the aisle," she says, still visibly touched. Soon, photos of her stint went viral online. One of Canada's premier wedding dress designers, Toni of Mille Fiori, saw the photos and contacted her. "She tracked me down and told me she liked my 'outside the box' form of marketing," she says with a grin.

    Pass on this store

    Did not have a good experience with trying to consign my clothing here. All around the service was poor, and their system was very unorganized. I ended up taking back my items and choosing another consignment store. The percentage your receive is low, you do not get a receipt when you leave your items stating how many things you leave with them, and you are not allowed to pick up your unsold items. Its hard to know what sold for sure if you can't get your unsold things back. One sales clerk was very friendly but found the manager to be very hard to deal with. Never again will I do back.
