5 ways to snap up great deals on cameras

28 juillet 2015

With so many cameras on the market, it's difficult to know which model is right for you. But with these tips, you can start snapping memories that could last a lifetime.

5 ways to snap up great deals on cameras

1. Educate yourself

  • Before shopping, settle on a price range.
  • Camera stores usually have knowledgeable staff that can talk to you about which cameras are available.
  • Visit the sites of the camera brands you are interested in to see the latest makes and models.
  • Once you've decided on the camera you want, begin to shop around. The electronic superstores tend to have better prices than camera shops, but more limited selection and less experienced staff.
  • Don't forget to watch for department store sales.

2. Snapping up deals

  • Last year's models always sell for less, and refurbished or display models come with the same warranty as a boxed item.
  • Check the online auctions. Second-hand digital cameras can be found at great prices and make an excellent second camera for the occasional user or, perhaps, as a starter camera for your kids.

3. Focus on features

  • Don't be fooled into spending money based on the sheer number of modes and menu options. Picture quality and convenience (lightweight, long battery life) are what will matter in the short term and long term.
  • Cameras tend to have two types of zoom: optical and digital. The optical figure is the one that contributes most to good picture quality. Digital zoom is helpful too, so think about how you'll be using the camera.
  • Check for options that automatically help you to compensate for tricky lighting conditions, such as shooting people against a bright sky or snowy backdrop.
  • Don't pay extra for gimmicky features that you know you won't use, like built-in special effects or movie modes.

4. Lasting memories

  • Digital cameras are very reliable and you're unlikely to need an extended warranty.
  • Consider whether your home contents insurance may already the cost of loss this at no extra cost — check your policy before buying extra coverage.
  • For other causes of failure, you can take out an extended warranty at the time of purchase. This costs about an extra 20 percent of the cost of the item for an extra two years after the initial 12-month warranty runs out.

5. See the whole picture

Lenses, battery packs, tripods, cases and other accessories can really add up. If you have a friend who loves photography, ask them if you can borrow some accessories. That way, you can see which ones you'll use before buying them for yourself.

While many of us can snap quick photos with our smart phones, serious photographers will want the quality and options that come with a proper camera. Now you can find the right one for your lifestyle, and start taking pictures that you'll love.
