Ricky Sosa has a fascination with skulls, but he promises it’s not morbid. “I love skulls,” he says. “I see it as equality. We’re all skeletons. One day we’re all gonna be gone and we’ll all be the same – skeletons.”
Ricky turns a resinous mould of a human skull into a work of art by painstakingly applying colourful beads in intricately detailed and impossibly asymmetric designs under the name Revolucionario. The Mexican-born graphic designer was inspired by beadwork from traditional mountainous tribes in his home country after spending time with a tribe and learning the trade. He then applied the technique to his skull art and has since transformed bones, animal skulls and skateboards with colourful beading. Each skull takes Ricky approximately 35 to 40 hours to complete, with larger projects like the skateboard clocking in at an impressive 100 hours.
